Classes for 2023

There are 23 classes

For the purpose of these Awards

‘A pie is deemed to be a filling wholly encased in pastry and baked’

Note: Entries which do not comply (open lattice topped, fruit topped, potato topped, samosas or any fried products etc.) will NOT be submitted for judging.  For clarity, a single hole in the lid of the pie must be no more than 25mm diameter (for steam exit or jellying etc)

Classes 1-5      Cold Eating and no weight restrictions except for Class 1 MMPP

Classes 6–23  Hot Eating and 660g weight restriction

1. Melton Mowbray Pork Pie – to be eaten and judged COLD

Description: Entries for this class must comply with the recognised legal specification (PGI) for an authentic Melton Mowbray Pork Pie of which details are available at www.mmppa.co.uk

Entry: 2 x 454g (1lb) Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, as defined above, to be judged as a pair

 

2. Pork Pie – to be eaten and judged COLD

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Entries may be any size. Pork must be the main ingredient of the filling. Pies may be baked in tins, hoops or free standing. Only pork meat (cured or uncured) and seasoning may be used in the filling. The pork must be British pork. No weight restriction

 

3. Cold-Eating Savoury Pie – to be eaten and judged COLD

Description: A cold eating savoury pie (meat, vegetarian, vegan).  An open class, for all to enter.  Entries may be any shape or size.  No weight restriction

 

4.Pasty – to be eaten and judged COLD

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Entry is a single pasty which may be any shape or size. For the purpose of these Awards a pasty is a single piece of pastry folded over and sealed along its edges to contain either savoury or sweet ingredients (occasionally both) and then baked. Can be crimped by hand or by machine. No weight restriction.

Cornish Pasty entries for this class must comply with the recognised legal specification (PGI) for a genuine Cornish Pasty of which details are available at www.cornishpastyassociation.com

 

5. Dessert Pie (including Bramley Apple Pie) – to be eaten and judged COLD

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Entries may be any shape or size.

Bramley Apple Pie: If entering a pie for this class as a Bramley Apple Pie then the filling must comply with the legal specification (TSG) for the Traditional Bramley Apple Pie Filling. Details of which can be found if you click here  Bramley Apple Filling

 

6. Steak and Kidney Pie – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Steak must be the main ingredient of the filling. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

7. Beef & Any Flavour Combination Pie – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Beef must be the main ingredient of the filling. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

8. Beef & Ale Pie – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Beef must be the main ingredient of the filling. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

9. Beef & Cheese Pie – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Beef must be the main ingredient of the filling. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

10. Meat & Potato Pie – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Meat must be the main ingredient of the filling. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

11. Lamb Pie – To be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Lamb must be the main ingredient of the filling. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

12. Chicken Pie – To be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Chicken must be the main ingredient of the filling. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

13. Chicken & Vegetable / Herb Pie – To be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Chicken must be the main ingredient of the filling. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

14. Chicken With Other Meat Pie – To be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Chicken must be the main ingredient of the filling. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

15. Speciality Meat & Game Pie – To be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Speciality meats include Venison, Bison, Rabbit etc. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

16. Hot-Eating Savoury Pie – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: A hot pie containing meat eg pork, apple and black pudding.  An open class, for all to enter.  Entries may be any shape or size and may weigh up to 660g.

 

17. Fish Pie – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter. Fish must be the main ingredient of the filling.Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

18. Vegetarian Pie – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter.  Entries must be totally vegetarian. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

19. Vegan Pie – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: An open class, for all to enter.  Entries must be totally vegan. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

20. Pub Pie – a pie commercially sold to pubs/breweries and- to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: A class open to Pubs, Breweries and/or their suppliers whose entries are commercially sold at their Pubs. The name of only one Pub/Brewery must accompany each entry. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

21. Sports Pie – a pie commercially sold at sports clubs – to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: A class open to Sports Clubs and/or their suppliers whose entries are commercially sold at their Clubs. The name of only one Club must accompany each entry. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

22. Fish & Chip Shop Pie  – a pie commercially sold in fish & chip shops- to be eaten and judged HOT

Description: A class open to Fish & Chip Shops and/or their suppliers whose entries are commercially sold at these Shops Clubs. The name of only one Club must accompany each entry. Entries may be any shape and may weigh up to 660g.

 

23. Free From – to be eaten and judged HOT.

Description: A Class open to all. A savoury or sweet pie, hot eating, fully encased in pastry, of any shape, but not weighing more than 660g.  The pie must be legally classified as GLUTEN FREE or VERY LOW GLUTEN, so both the pastry and filling must therefore be GLUTEN FREE or VERY LOW GLUTEN. In compliance with EC labelling standards (EC No. 41/2009) all pies entered in this Class must contain less than 100ppm Gluten. The Organisers reserve the right to request evidence of compliance.

 

Please Note:

All entries must be received ready baked and chilled to <8°C

In an effort to reduce unnecessary waste & cost to Entrants only ONE Pie per Entry (except for Class 1 which calls for TWO Pies per Entry as the Pies are judged as a pair); and,

All Entries entered into Class 1 (Melton Mowbray Pork Pie) must comply with the current PGI regulations for the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie.

All entries in Class 4 (Pasty Class) must comply with the current PGI regulations if entering a Cornish Pasty

All Bramley Apple Pies entered into Class 5 must comply with the Traditional Speciality Guaranteed regulations for Bramley Apple Filling if entering a Bramley Apple Pie

All Entries entered into Class 18 (Vegetarian Pie Class) must be 100% Vegetarian. For details of what ingredients are Vegetarian please visit vegsoc.org/veggieaware

All Entries entered into Class 23 (Free From) In compliance with EC labelling standards (EC No. 41/2009) all pies entered in this Class must contain less than 100ppm Gluten. The Organisers reserve the right to request evidence of compliance.
