Classes for 2024

There are 24 classes – Class 24 is new this year and is a ‘Fusion pie’

For the purpose of these Awards

  • ‘A pie is deemed to be a filling wholly encased in pastry and baked’ Note: Entries which do not comply (open lattice topped, fruit topped, potato topped, samosas or any fried products etc.) will NOT be submitted for judging. 
  • For clarity, a single hole in the lid of the pie must be no more than 25mm diameter (for steam exit or jellying etc)
  • All entries must be received ready baked and chilled to <8°C
  • Only ONE Pie per Entry (except for Class 1 which requires 2 pies per Entry)

 

  1. Melton Mowbray Pork Pie
    RESTRICTED ENTRY
  • To be judged cold
  • Enter: 2 x 454g (1lb) Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, as defined above, to be judged as a pair

Entries for this class must comply with the recognised legal specification (PGI) for an authentic Melton Mowbray Pork Pie of which details are available at www.mmppa.co.uk

  1. Pork Pie
  • To be judged cold
  • No weight restriction
  • Pork (cured or uncured) together with seasonings may be the only ingredients in the filling, unless a small amount of rusk or other filler is used.
  • The pie may be glazed or unglazed.
  • Pies may be baked in tins, hoops or free standing
  • Pork pies containing non-traditional seasonings or additions (i.e. apple, black pudding, chorizo etc) should be entered into Class 3.
  1. Cold-Eating Savoury Pie
  • To be judged cold
  • No weight restriction
  • A cold eating savoury pie (meat, vegetarian, vegan). 
  1. Pasty
    PART RESTRICTED ENTRY (Cornish Pasty)
  • To be judged cold
  • No weight restriction
  • For the purpose of these Awards a pasty is a single piece of pastry folded over and sealed along its edges which contains a filling and is baked.
  • Filling can be savoury or sweet (or both)
  • Can be crimped by hand or by machine.

Cornish Pasty entries for this class must comply with the recognised legal specification (PGI) for a genuine Cornish Pasty of which details are available at www.cornishpastyassociation.com

  1. Dessert Pie
    PART RESTRICTED ENTRY (Bramley apple pie)
  • To be judged cold
  • Entries may be any shape, size or weight
  • A Pie that contains a sweet filling of which fruit could typically be the main ingredient

Bramley Apple Pie: If entering a pie for this class as a Bramley Apple Pie then the filling must comply with the legal specification (TSG) for the Traditional Bramley Apple Pie Filling.   1. Steak and Kidney Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Steak & Kidney must be the main ingredient of the filling
  • Must be baked not steamed
  1. Beef Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Beef must be the main ingredient of the filling (with no alcohol and no vegetable other than onion
  1. Beef & Alcohol Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Beef must be the main ingredient of the filling which must also contain alcohol in the gravy or sauce
  1. Beef & Cheese Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Beef must be the main ingredient of the filling along with naming the cheese used
  1. Beef & Vegetable Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Beef and vegetables must be the main ingredients of the filling
  1. Meat & Potato Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Meat must be the main ingredient of the filling along with potato
  1. Lamb Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Lamb must be the main ingredient of the filling and may be combined with any other flavours
  1. Chicken, Chicken & Vegetable/Herb Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Chicken must be the main ingredient of the filling along with vegetables and/or herbs
  1. Chicken With Other Meat Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Chicken must be the main ingredient of the filling along with at least one other named meat
  1. Game & Speciality Meat Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Speciality meats include Venison, Bison, Rabbit etc which must be significant ingredients within the pie
  1. Hot-Eating Savoury Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • This Class is for a Pie with a savoury filling that has been formulated/designed to be heated up and served hot (i.e. not served cold) and the fill is of a solid type texture
  • For clarity, this class does not allow for meat or vegetables in a sauce/gravy, pies of this nature should be entered into the appropriate class according to the definitions.
  1. Fish Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Fish must be the main ingredient of the filling, but can be combined with any other flavours
  • For clarity the pie cannot be potato topped
  1. Vegetarian Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Entries must be totally vegetarian (see definition below) and can be of any flavour profile
  • Cold eating vegetarian pies should be entered into Class 3

  1. Vegan Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • Entries must be totally vegan (see definition below) but can be of any flavour profile
  • Cold eating vegan pies should be entered into Class 3

  1. Pub Pie
    RESTRICTED ENTRY (The Pie must be commercially sold to pubs/breweries)
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • A Class open to Pubs, Breweries and/or their suppliers whose entries are commercially sold at their Pubs. The pie can be any pie that they sell on their menu of any flavour profile, that meets the British Pie Awards definition of a pie
  • The name of only one Pub/Brewery must accompany each entry
  1. Sports Pie
    RESTRICTED ENTRY (The Pie must be commercially sold at sports clubs)
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • A Class open to Sports Clubs and/or their suppliers whose entries are commercially sold at their Clubs. The pie can be any pie that they sell at their club, of any flavour profile, that meets the British Pie Awards definition of a pie
  • The name of only one Club must accompany each entry
  1. Fish & Chip Shop Pie
    RESTRICTED ENTRY (The Pie must be commercially sold in fish & chip shops)
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • A Class open to Fish & Chip Shops and/or their suppliers whose entries are commercially sold at a Fish & Chip shop. The pie can be any pie that they sell at their Chip Shop, of any flavour profile, that meets the British Pie Awards definition of a pie
  • The name of only one Chip Shop must accompany each entry
  1. Free From Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • A free from pie that meets the definition below
  • A savoury or sweet pie, hot eating, fully encased in pastry

The Pie must be legally classified as GLUTEN FREE or VERY LOW GLUTEN, so both the pastry and filling must therefore be GLUTEN FREE or VERY LOW GLUTEN. In compliance with EC labelling standards (EC No. 41/2009) all pies entered in this Class must contain less than 100ppm Gluten. The Organisers reserve the right to request evidence of compliance.

  1. Fusion Pie
  • To be judged hot
  • Maximum weight 660g
  • This new Class is for a Pie that combines the British tradition of being fully enclosed with pastry but with flavour profiles from around the world (e.g. chicken tikka or biriyani pie, lamb rogan josh, beef chilli etc)
  • Fillings can be savoury or sweet e.g. empanada, samosa, vegetarian or vegan and must be fully baked and not fried in pastry

Please Note:

All entries must be received ready baked and chilled to <8°C

In an effort to reduce unnecessary waste & cost to Entrants only ONE Pie per Entry (except for Class 1 which calls for TWO Pies per Entry as the Pies are judged as a pair); and,

All Entries entered into Class 1 (Melton Mowbray Pork Pie) must comply with the current PGI regulations for the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie.

All entries in Class 4 (Pasty Class) must comply with the current PGI regulations if entering a Cornish Pasty

All Bramley Apple Pies entered into Class 5 must comply with the Traditional Speciality Guaranteed regulations for Bramley Apple Filling if entering a Bramley Apple Pie

All Entries entered into Class 18 (Vegetarian Pie Class) must be 100% Vegetarian. For details of what ingredients are Vegetarian please visit vegsoc.org/veggieaware

All Entries entered into Class 19 (Vegan Pie Class) must be 100% Vegan. For details of what ingredients are Vegan please visit vegansociety.com

All Entries entered into Class 23 (Free From) In compliance with EC labelling standards (EC No. 41/2009) all pies entered in this Class must contain less than 100ppm Gluten. The Organisers reserve the right to request evidence of compliance.
